My Healthy Hair Journey: Part 3 

Why My Hair Journey Became a 'Health Journey' and How I Changed My Diet For Optimal Hair Growth 

 

It’s been 2 months since I began my healthy hair journey and it’s definitely been an eye-opening experience. That may sound ridiculous, but fixing the health of my hair actually inspired me to look into my own health as well.  If I could achieve such great results with just products alone how could other factors – such as diet and lifestyle – enhance those results? I’ve looked closely at my diet and other not-so-natural beauty products to see what’s worth keeping and what’s not.

 

Once I stopped putting toxic products on hair it motivated me to found out where these other harmful chemicals could be lurking. Turns out they are everywhere, and we’re putting them directly on our skin everyday.  Without going into too much detail I can tell you make-up is a big heavy-hitter. As a lipstick hoarder I was especially disheartened to find out that 80% of makeup contains at least one of these harmful chemicals: Dirty Dozen Cosmetic Chemicals to Avoid. Now that I’ve successfully rid my bathroom of toxic haircare products maybe it’s time to do the same for makeup…one lipstick at a time.

In the past couple months I’ve also taken a good look at my diet and how that might affect my hair, nails, and skin. In the past, every time I thought I was lacking a certain vitamin I’d reach for a supplement. Dry, brittle hair? Biotin. Acne? Zinc. Low-energy and fatigue? B12. I maintain a healthy diet, but my reliance on supplements was out of control. It wasn’t until I visited a naturopath that I realized I could get everything I needed from food. I am now proudly only taking 2 supplements and instead of pill-popping I’ve modified my diet for optimal hair health. Here are my top hair-healthy foods:

 

1. Almond Butter

 

Almond butter is variation to the classic peanut butter and you’ll want to make sure this is on your next grocery list.  Not only is it delicious, but it also contains a high amount of essential fatty acids. It also contains protein and vitamin E content, which is particularly good for keeping hair thick and shiny. My favorite way to enjoy almond butter is in my oatmeal or spread on a rice cracker, drizzled with honey and topped with dried fruit. This stuff has saved me from a lot late-night cravings!

 

2. Spinach

 

This leafy green contains a number of nutrients including omega-3 acids, magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron. That last one is super important for me because I don’t eat meat (other than fish) and an iron deviancy can lead to a variety of problems including hair loss. Iron helps red blood cells carry oxygen to hair follicles, which is crucial for growth and strengthening strands. I add at least ½ cup of spinach to my scrambled eggs everyday or I’ll throw it in a smoothie.

 

3. Eggs

 

Biotin supplements are often seen as the go-to vitamin for beauty, but it’s much easier (and cheaper) to incorporate this nutrient into your diet. I alternate between scrambled eggs and oatmeal for breakfast (which is also a great source of iron!). I’ll also make a batch of hard-boiled eggs at the beginning of the week to throw in a salad or just to have as a snack. If eggs aren’t your thing, nuts also provide your body with significant amount of biotin so stock up on that almond butter!

 

While I’ve been working on my diet my haircare routine has remained the same. Although I still occasionally use heat I’ve noticed my natural texture has improved since using The Innate Life products. Since these products are so potent a little bit truly goes a long way, and doesn’t leave my feeling greasy or weighed down.
